The
boot portion of Windows Me can only be installed onto the first
physical drive. The Windows Me boot record always reads sectors
from the first physical hard drive, and will behave unpredictably
when booted from another physical hard drive. |
| |
|
| |
Windows
Me cannot be installed into an extended or logical partition.
It will only boot from a Primary FAT partition. |
| |
|
| |
A
bug in Windows Me will prevent access to multiple primary partitions
if the last logical partition on every drive is not FAT. Thus,
if you create a primary partition for Windows Me, a second primary
partition for MS-DOS, then install Windows 2000 into an extended
partition using NTFS, your Windows Me will have problems accessing
the MS-DOS partition. If you create a logical DOS drive after
the NTFS drive, Windows Me will not have any problems accessing
the MS-DOS partition. |
| |
|
| |
We
recommend that if installing into the MultiFAT (where System
Commander Resides) that only one Windows 95/98/Me be installed
in that partition, since the Program Files directory overlaps.
Installing DOS, NT/2000/XP or OS/2 in the same partition causes
no problems. |

for a successful Windows Me Upgrade installation |
| |
|
| These
tips will help ensure a successful Windows Me installation (summarized
from Brian Livingston's Inforworld article 18-Sep-2000), if
you installing Windows Me on top of Windows 98. |
| |
|
| 1 |
Scandisk
- Run scandisk and clean up any problems it finds. |
| |
|
| 2 |
Anit-virus
software - Load the latest signature files from your anti-virus
vendor and perform a full anti-virus scan. |
| |
|
| 3 |
Drivers
- Check the hardware manufactures for the very latest drivers
for devices such as scanners, modems, etc. It is much better
to install these now than after Windows Me installation. |
| |
|
| 4 |
Backup
your System! If you haven't backed up in a while (or ever)
now is a very good time to do so. If you fail to do so, and
the system goes south - well we warned you! |
| |
|
| 5 |
End
all tasks before starting the Windows Me installation. Do
not use Ctrl+Alt+Del to end tasks, but properly close the applications.
You might also disable tasks like anti-virus and other task-bar
items. |
| |
|
| 6 |
Uninstall
- If you have Norton Internet Security or Network ICE's Black
ICE Defender, PGP Personal Privacy, or GoBack (v2.1.4 or older).
Windows Me will not install if these are installed. |
| |
|
| 7 |
Readme
- Read the Windows Me readme information on the CD at D:\add-ons\document\textfile
(where D is replaced with your CD drive letter). To read the
files before having the Windows Me AutoRun starts, hold down
the shift key while inserting the Windows Me CD. |
| |
|
| 8 |
Emergency
Boot Disk - When prompted to do so during the Windows Me
installation, make the Emergency Boot Diskette (EBD). Since
Windows Me no longer has a "F8" to command prompt
option, if Windows fails to boot, the EBD may be the only way
to fix it. (Having System Commander with alternate OS choices
will also save the day). |
| |
|
| 9 |
Save
System Files - When prompted to do so, save the old system
files. This can also get you out of trouble if Windows Me fails
to operate as expected. |
