Windows
2000 installs its OS Loader into the active primary partition
on the first drive (this is what starts Windows 2000). The balance
of Windows 2000 can be installed on any drive, in a primary
or logical partition. |

| Installation |
| |
To install
Windows 2000 entirely by itself, using the full version (not
an update):
| 1) |
From
the Windows CD, switch to the \bootdisk directory and run
makeboot. This will make the four bootable floppies necessary
to install Windows 2000. |
| |
|
| 2) |
Create and format a primary FAT or FAT32 partition on
the first drive using a partitioning product such as Partition
Commander or System Commander. Make this
partition the active (bootable) partition. |
| |
|
| 3)
|
Install Windows 2000 by booting directly from boot disk
1 created earlier. Be sure to select to install on drive
C:, which is the active partition. |

| |
|
| 2)
|
Install or copy Windows NT or other allowable OS that
Windows 2000 accepts for upgrading. |
| |
|
| 3) |
Once
the old OS is running properly, then install Windows 2000
by running setup from the CD-ROM. |

| Special
Warnings |
| |
|
| |
If
you are installing Windows 2000 into a logical partition, and
wish to leave unpartitioned space for other operating systems,
you should manually create the Windows 2000 partition rather
than allow the Windows 2000 installation to create it. This
can be accomplished by using the Windows 2000 disk administrator
or System Commander's manual partitioning. |
| |
|
| |
When
installing Windows 2000 upgrade on top of Windows 95/98/Me, your
Windows 95/98 will be destroyed. We recommend using System Commander’s OS Wizard to prepare a copy of your existing Windows
95/98/Me in another partition for installation of Windows 2000.
In the OS Wizard, select upgrade, isolated and it will do the
necessary work for you. |
| |
|
| |
Running
Windows 2000 when a system has Windows NT in another partition
may alter the NT partition so that it no longer functions properly.

corrupt Windows NT? |
