Basics
What
are jumpers?
A jumper is a small plug or switch that closes an electrical
circuit. For each available configuration
of an IDE/ATA hard drive, jumpers need to be physically set
in a particular arrangement on the outside casing of the drive.
SATA
(Serial ATA) drives do not have configuration jumpers. Each SATA
drive is connected to it's own single connector. When
adding a SATA drive to an existing system that does not currently
have a SATA drive, it may be necessary to update your BIOS settings.
Consult your system
manual
for details.

Hard Drive Configuration Options
Note: Most drives do not support all of these configuration
options. The Configuration list displays only those options
available for the selected drive.
Single
- One drive for the system.
Master
with slave - The first drive of a two-drive configuration.
Slave
- The second drive of a two-drive configuration.
Cable
select - The drive's attachment to the interface cable
determines which drive is the master and which is the slave.
AC
- Alternate Capacity. Causes drive capacity to be lowered.
This is required by some very old BIOS's that only
auto-detect (no user-defined setting). Most drives today
do not have
this option, and it
is rarely used.
Non-ATA
- Slave drive is not compatible with the AT Attachment standard.
