FAQs
- Win 95/98 into DOS/Win 3.x |
| |
|
|
| |
|
How
do I install Windows 95/98 into the DOS/Windows 3.x partition with
System Commander version 3.x and lower? |
| |
|
| |
 |
| 1 |
Boot
the computer into DOS, and from the C:\ prompt, make a new directory
to store DOS files. Type MD DOSTEMP <enter> |
| 2 |
Change
to the DOS directory and copy DOS files to the new temporary
directory. Type CD DOS <enter>, then type COPY
*.* C:\DOSTEMP <enter>. |
| 3 |
Change
to the Windows directory on the hard drive. From the C:\ prompt,
type CD WINDOWS, or whatever the name of your Windows
directory is, and press the ENTER key. |
| 4 |
In
the Windows directory you must rename the file win.com to win.tmp.
Type RENAME win.com win.tmp <enter>. (Note:
You only need to rename win.com if you are installing a full
OEM version of Windows 95/98. If you are installing an upgrade
version, DO NOT rename win.com or the upgrade wil not install). |
| 5 |
During
the Windows 95/98 installation, chose the Custom Installation
option and rename the default path of C:\Windows to something
else, i.e. C:\WIN95. **NOTE* If prompted to scan for
applications or to install programs on the hard drive, do not
select this option. |
| 6 |
Upon
completion of the Windows 95/98 installation, reboot the computer.
The system will boot directly into Windows 95/98, and you will
notice that System Commander did not show up at boot time. The
following steps will reactivate System Commander. |
| 7 |
From
the Windows 95/98 desktop click on the Start button,
then Run. In the dialog box type C:\SC\SCIN, and
click OK. From the SCIN menu select Reinstall / Update
System Commander <enter>. When the operation is complete,
exit program back to the Windows desktop. |
| 8 |
Restore
DOS files. Choose the DOS choice from the System Commander
menu, and at the C:\ prompt, change to the temporary directory
that you created above in step 3. Type CD DOSTEMP <enter>.
Type COPY *.* C:\DOS <enter>. When the copy
is complete, reboot the computer and you should have the
System
Commander menu with DOS Windows 95/98 and Windows 3.x selections
and all should boot properly.
Note: If you are using an OEM version of Windows 95/98, this
process is not guaranteed to work because of the dominant
nature of OEM versions of Windows 95/98. If these steps do
not work and you do have an OEM version of Windows 95/98,
you will have to repartition the hard drive into separate
partitions.
